Wang Jianping warmly welcomed President Peter Mutharika for his visit. He noted when he introduced CEEC that, as a Fortune Global 500 enterprise, CEEC can offer full-process services from planning, design to construction and O&M, with its businesses covering such fields as electric power, transportation, water conservancy, environmental protection and municipal engineering. As a backbone enterprise of CEEC, CGGC has accumulated rich experience in international engineering over the past 30 years. He noted that Africa is an important strategic market of CEEC, and CEEC is willing to fully participate in electric, transport and municipal infrastructure construction in Malawi, and proactively promote the initiation and implementation of various projects, thus further strengthening the friendship between China and Malawi.

President Peter Mutharika extended sincere gratitude to CEEC for the warm reception. He noted that electric power shortage is the main challenge that restricts Malawi’s economic development. The Government of Malawi hopes to strengthen the electric power construction, improve electric power production capacity, and promote the economic, social and industrial development. The Government of Malawi attaches great importance to the cooperation with CEEC, supports CEEC’s businesses in Malawi, and is willing to partner with Malawi to promote the cooperation projects as soon as possible, thus making new contributions to the friendship between the two countries and their peoples.

Malawi, a landlocked country in southeastern Africa, is extremely lack of electricity. In February 2011, KAPICHIRA Phase II Hydropower Project undertaken by CEEC was officially commenced. The Project is located on the Cher River, the only export river of the Lake Malawi- the Third Greatest Lakes in Africa, and is set with 2 x 32MW generating units. The Project was completed two months ahead of the contract period, and was awarded the Quality Engineering Certificate issued by the Ministry of Energy and Mining of Malawi.
