Official Commissioning of Asia’s First Coal-fired Power Plant Carbon Capture Testing Platform

2019/02/28

On December 23, 2018, the Carbon Capture Testing Platform of China Resources Haifeng Power Plant (“Haifeng Project”), an EPC project undertaken by GEDI, a subsidiary of Energy China, captured the first tank of CO2 through a 20t/day membrane separation-based carbon capture system, the first of its kind in the world. This marks the entry into the commissioning stage of Asia’s first multi-threaded international carbon capture testing platform and the world’s first carbon capture testing platform based on ultra-supercritical (USC) coal-fired generating units.

Built on the Unit 1 (a 1,050MW USC coal-fired generating unit already put into production) of Haifeng Power Plant, Haifeng Project comprises of a flue gas pre-treatment system, an amine- and membrane-based carbon capture system, a compression and purification system and supporting electrical, thermal control and other auxiliary systems. The Haifeng Project can capture about 20,000 tons of CO2 per year which, upon purification, can be used for food processing and industrial purposes.
