Ethiopia's Tigray State Working Group Inspects the Mekelle Water Supply Development Project

2019/05/03

On May 1, a 17-people delegation led by Mr. Abraham Tekeste, Deputy Governor of Tigray State and Director-General of Commerce, Investment and Urban Development, Ms. Letebrhan Semaiat, President of Mekelle City Council, and Mr. Araya Girmay, Mayor of Mekelle City, visited the Mekelle Water Supply Development Project for inspection, in the company of relevant personnel of the Project Department.

The Working Group debriefed on the report of the Project Department in the conference room, visited the construction site to inspect the entrance and exit of the diversion tunnel, upstream cofferdam and other parts, and got a detailed understanding of the construction of each part and next-step work plan of the Project Department.

After inspection, the Working Group exchanged ideas with the Project Department. Mr. Abraham Tekeste was satisfied with the progress of the Mekelle Water Supply Development Project, and extended gratitude to CGGC for its contribution to local economic development and employment. He hoped CGGC could make all endeavors to satisfactorily complete the Project as scheduled. He noted that they will further strengthen the coordination and negotiation with CGGC on possible challenges in the future, and that the local government will leverage all support to help CGGC smoothly complete the Project.

As the largest project aided by China in Ethiopia and a key project cooperated under the context of the “Belt and Road Initiative”, the Project is of great significance in relieving the water shortage in Mekelle City and boosting the development and construction of the city.
